San Francisco was completely cloaked in fog when I got home from work yesterday, so our sunny weekend in Palm Springs seems particularly far away right about now. All the same, it’s nearly April so I can’t help but want to think only about sunshine and warm weather, and I know you East Coasters have got to be feeling the same since things should be getting warm there after all. Think those warm thoughts, lovelies; meanwhile, I’ll pretend that I never left the SoCal desert.

Flamingos

As a big fan of most things tropical, I made a serious beeline across the store when I spotted this flamingo-printed top in Zara recently. It works pretty perfectly as part of a resort look, but I’ll be just as happy to pair it with jeans and blazers back in San Francisco (where things are a good deal cooler than they were in Palm Springs, the site of these photos). Bonus: The print might be just sunny enough to keep me warm on the especially foggy SF days.

Years ago on vacation in one of my favorite spots in Puerto Rico, I stumbled across this glass necklace in the gift shop of our hotel. I loved it but hesitated (as Caribbean gift shops can be quite confusing), and when I went back the next day to snag it, it was gone, destined to become one of those pieces that would plague me as the one that got away for years to come. Little did I know, my very sweet boyfriend (now husband) had picked it up for me while I wasn’t looking – even scooping up a not-as-cute pair of matching earrings out of love – and now I can reach for it anytime I want to be instantly transported to that little beach town. January is an excellent time to channel the tropics, right?

Layers

The weather here is super erratic – one minute it’s warm and sunny, the next it’s cloudy and cold – so I’ve been learning to dress in layers a little more regularly than I did back in the Southeast. It’s not a skill I’ve fully mastered yet (seeing as I’m used to either sweltering or freezing or rainy or warm or chilly – and not all in one day) but I’m getting there. Another thing I’ve learned: People here dress incredibly inappropriately for the temperature (chicks in shorts and flip flops in 50 degrees, dudes in ski hats and parkas in 60), so it seems we’re all a bit confused.

Despite my growing love for San Francisco, one place will always be home – nice to have a little something to remind me of that, even while basking in the no-jacket-needed January afternoon sun. Plus, I’ve been really into shirts like this to mix things up lately – what are y’all’s thoughts on graphic tees? I’ve been digging them paired with pretty much any and everything.
