Seaside signs in Half Moon Bay

Sometimes I feel like I should’ve never aged out of summer camp. I was one of those kids who couldn’t get enough of the hours chock full of sailing, horseback riding, soccer, arts and crafts, talent shows, what have you – and to this day I find myself treating weekends as days to be filled with scheduled activities. The Bay Area is pretty conducive to these tendencies, seeing as there’s no shortage of things to do and the weather’s pretty friendly year round (sorry, East Coast – I hear it’s pretty rough outside right now). Taking full advantage of that, we headed down to Half Moon Bay (home of the very famous and very ginormous Mavericks surf break) for some seaside hiking and outdoor beer drinking on Saturday, driving north back up the Pacific Coast Highway just as the sun was beginning to set.

To thwart the possible onset of boredom on unplanned Sunday, the activity continued with a trip to the downtown farmers’ market, a run through the park with Milo (I have discovered that running in San Francisco on weekends is like competing in a giant road race – settle down, dudes in tights), and a visit to a very windy Ocean Beach.

And now, rest?

Saturday afternoon ice cream in a deserted nearby town

Sometimes those weekends spent at home with few plans are the best. Other than a concert Friday night, I had very little on the agenda for the past couple of days, which is really my favorite kind of weekend – don’t tell anyone. I’m headed out of town for the bachelorette celebration of one of my best amigas next weekend, and it’s sure to be the best kind of fun but anything but relaxing, so I spent this weekend recharging my batteries and catching up on sleep in preparation.

I also spent a good chunk of time indulging in the flavors of summer – strawberry ice cream, watermelon and about a zillion varieties of tomatoes, to be exact.

And since I’ve been jamming to Best Coast nonstop since the show, I will invite you, too, to jam out:

Nighttime in nearby Saxapahaw

As expected, things were seriously steamy – and I don’t mean in the exciting way – around here this weekend. North Carolina is typically pretty  hot in the summer, but this is just getting absurd. Accordingly, I didn’t go outside much (except after dark, and even then it was ridiculous). We did take a little drive out in the country to a little mill town on the nearby Haw River, which proved to be a not-too-sweltering evening trip. Hopefully things will start to cool off a bit soon, because holing up inside for the duration just isn’t an option.

If I can make it through the next couple of days, we’re headed down to the coast on the 4th for a nice mini-vacay – so I’m keeping my eye on the prize.

Yeah, so that happened

My favorite summer salad – watermelon+tomatoes+basil+lime juice

A gift from mom’s jewelry box – my favorite “new” earrings

Digging through my purse for lip gloss, I realized I have six various lip options in one bag. Excessive?

More tomatoes – one reason to love the heat and this time of year

Farmer’s market sunflowers with Milo (Ella Moss Prima Donna Maxi Skirt, ADA belt)

The past couple of days felt like a classic summer weekend, complete with a trip to the farmers’ market, fresh flowers, porch wine and an outdoor birthday party down on the coast. And it was full of summer’s colors – in the landscape, the rapidly increasing selection at the market and the meals we enjoyed. This week as the Monday to Friday grind gets going, I’m vowing to make an effort to slow down a bit and draw on those things for inspiration, since after all, it is summertime, and the living should be a bit easier.
