I spent of good bit of time over the Thanksgiving holiday frolicking in the East Coast sand, despite less-than-balmy temps. To maximize the hours outdoors, I lived in knits of all shapes and sizes pretty much all weekend (learning quickly that loose-knit types aren’t so great for ocean breezes). My sister knitted me this headband a while back and it’s pretty perfect for chilly-but-not-too-chilly days, though I’ve discovered that it’s one of those pieces that you’ve gotta commit a full day to, as it is not so kind to the hair, especially that of the banged variety.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, my dude and I split time with our respective families on the North Carolina coast, with a couple of nights spent in Emerald Isle and a couple spent on Bald Head Island. We’ve only got a little over a week before we pack up and head west for San Francisco, so I was glad to get in some last-minute time in my favorite place with loved ones. As expected, there was also quite a bit of eating, drinking, and eating. Gotta love the holidays.

Weekend Details

Though things have most certainly started transitioning to fall on the coast, the past couple of days at the beach were warm enough for all grades of outdoor activity, and accordingly my weekend was spent with bike rides around the island, runs on the beach and even a last-of-the-season swim. As nice as all that was, the weekend flew by in a flash and here we are at Monday again. Do you ever find that the more awesome the weekend, the worse it is to get back to the grind? Bleh.

We traveled down to Bald Head Island this weekend, and I was surprised to find that it was nearly deserted with families having returned home and kids having gone back to school. I get a sort of nostalgic sadness in the last days of summer every year, and it hit me like a ton of bricks this weekend despite glorious weather and beaches nearly all to ourselves. Regardless, I still love the shore in these late days of August – can’t seem to shake it.

So if you’ve been reading this blog for longer than say, five minutes, you know that I am pretty into the beach. But what you may not know is that the best time of the day on the shore, by far, is that hour after showers and before dinner (and not just cause of the cocktails – well maybe a little because of the cocktails) when everything turns all golden and blue and most everyone’s gone inside. The other night I found myself subconsciously channeling the colors of that hour at the ocean before a little walk down there, and I had a thought on a new style theme: Dress like your favorite time of day. Weird? Yes. But imagine the fun we’ll have!
